Ocean Institute, founded in 1977, is a community-based 501(c)(3) organization located in Dana Point, California. Over the past four decades, it has grown into a premier ocean education center, dedicated to inspiring all generations through hands-on marine science and historical maritime experiences. Nestled alongside a marine protected area in Dana Point Harbor, the Institute offers a unique setting for studying and protecting our ocean environment.
With a mission to educate the public about marine science, maritime history, and environmental stewardship, Ocean Institute provides a variety of interactive programs for students, educators, and visitors. Its facilities include state-of-the-art laboratories, teaching stations, a Research Vessel that hosts weekly Whale and Marine Life Tours of the coastline, and a replica of a historic tall ship, the Spirit of Dana Point, that takes guests out to experience sailing on the high seas.
Ocean Institute’s evolution has seen the expansion of its educational outreach, with programs designed to engage students in STEM, and foster a deeper appreciation for the ocean and marine inhabitants. Additionally, Ocean Institute hosts annual events such as their March Gala and renowned Maritime Festival, which attract visitors from the community and across the region. These annual events aim to raise funds to support Ocean Institute’s efforts to bring more students annually to the facility for immersive programs free of charge.
