Pacific Marine Mammal Center
On June 12, 2023, our founder and president, Jay "Sparky" Longley, discovered a heart-wrenching scene when he stumbled upon a pregnant sea lion on the beach in front of his house. The sea lion was visibly ill, suffering from the effects of Domoic acid poisoning. Understanding the urgency of the situation, Jay swiftly contacted the Pacific Marine Mammal Center for assistance. Recognizing the critical condition of the sea lion, the team from the center promptly arrived at the scene to rescue the distressed animal. At the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, the sea lion's journey took an unexpected turn when she gave birth to a healthy pup within the safety of the mammal hospital's walls. Following a period of careful nursing and rehabilitation, Jay, along with dedicated members of the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, joyfully participated in releasing the sea lion, named Rainbow, back into her natural habitat. The heartwarming event took place at Crystal Cove on August 1st, symbolizing both a remarkable recovery for Rainbow and the power of compassion and teamwork to preserve marine life.
Rainbow® Sandals Foundation is providing financial support to Pacific Marine Mammal Center. Recognizing the importance of preserving marine life and the need for marine mammal rescue and rehabilitation efforts, Rainbow Sandals Foundation understands the crucial role that Pacific Marine Mammal Center plays in this regard.
