The honor of meeting retired USMC Capt. Derek Hererra

by Pat Huber |

Recently we had the honor of meeting retired USMC Capt. Derek Hererra, whom we could help via the Challenged Athletes Foundation. While leading his team on patrol in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan, on June 24, 2012, Derek was shot in the spine and instantly paralyzed. When he returned to the U.S., Derek spent six months rehabilitation at a Veteran's hospital in Florida.

Derek is a Challenged Athlete and friends with Paul Webb (featured above, left), who raises money and awareness for the Challenged Athletes Foundation by riding his bike cross-country wearing Rainbow Sandals. Challenged Athletes Foundation's mission is to provide opportunities and support people with physical challenges to pursue active lifestyles through physical fitness and competitive athletics. The CAF believes that involvement in sports at any level increases self-esteem, encourages independence, and enhances the quality of life.

Rainbow Sandals Foundation is proud to partner with CAF with a contribution of $50,000. This money will help people like Derek obtain the equipment needed to pursue an active life.
